20 August 2006 - Vanuatu

5pm, Sunday 20 Aug 06. As I mentioned, the water fall was awesome! John, his brother Ken, and I went to Siri Falls. The water fall is 120 meters! It's about a 6 hour round trip from Kerliu village, where we are staying. The last 30 minutes walk to the waterfall is very steep and slippery. Part way down, there's a smaller waterfall... it's water that comes straight out of the rock! Perfect for drinking! As we neared the waterfall (200 m away) it was like it was raining lightly. Heavy mist and water fell on us. We heard the roar of the water pounding on the rocks below. We swam across the large fresh water pool about 50 metres from the waterfall base. The rocks are totally saturated (and have been that way for centuries). Plenty of moss. So much fresh clean clear water!

We got across the other side of the water. As we neared the waterfall, the "rain" got heavier. We got within about 20 m of the water fall (on some rocks, not in the water by then). It was like heavy rain pounding on us. Totally drenched, like a summer thunderstorm. There were great blasts of wind and water being thrown at us. We could not look straight ahead, as our eyes were instantly blurred... we had to keep looking down. We sat with our backs to the waterfall, and the water "bullets" raced into the skin on our backs and stung slightly. Wave after wave of forceful wind and water came. It was an experience not to be forgotten. The climax was reached, and we headed back, getting hit with less and less water. We swam on our backs back across the large water pool again, looking upside down at the towering waterfall. It was amazing.

We ate coconuts when we regained our normal senses. Beautiful coconut water, and sustaining coconut flesh. Things are so simple. We made our way back home, noticing the slightly warmer air at sea level. The waterfall top is at 350 m above sea level, and the base is about 230 m, thanks to the GPS and altimeter. I'll never forget that walk.

Friday I taught a small Bible class, on the life of Jesus Christ, the miracles, parables, ministry, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Him. Many things are evident of the fact that He was the Son of God. Did some washing after that and enjoyed the sunshine!

Yesterday, Sabbath, we walked to church again. Fine weather, making the 5km exercise easier than last time. My last time at the church there. It's a nice church, with the typical Islander singing. I like it. Plenty of kids. It's great to see their smiling faces and happy attitude.

Today, John and I went to Mbaravit beach. Just beautiful. (Check out the small photo attached to this email.) I had my goggles, so we saw the coloured fish swimming amongst the coral and experienced the underwater world of tropical islands. The beach is one mass of crushed coral of different sizes. Some more like sand, other parts in chunks of coral inches large. The beautiful clear, blue tropical water and crashing waves made it a perfect place. We tried catching a few fish in a water pool, broke open some coconuts, and collected shells and coral. Then washed off in "Big Water", which is the large fresh water stream which comes down from the waterfall. Flow rate is maybe 5 to 10 cubic meters per second, to give you an idea. Plenty of people swiming at Big water, jumping of the small bridge, laughing, and enjoying the day.

So, now it's time to move on. Last night was the last night staying with the Turnbulls at Kerliu Bungalow, 1 hour from the church. I'll be staying at Wan Grass (One Grass) Bungalows near the airport, only a few minutes from the church, until Friday. There is a "Voice of Youth" mission and revival program every night from tomorrow (Monday) night for a week. I've been asked to speak a few times there, so I'll need to do some preparation. Tuesday, we walk up to the lake in the crater of the volcano. Part of the volcano is active (yes, red hot lava) and we may be able to see it, using a local dug-out canoe to cross the lake. I've been told it's the most dangerous volcano in Vanuatu, due to its thin layer of "stuff" holding in the magma. Anyhow, see what happens. There's a group of us from the church going up, including the pastor and youth.

Friday, Jared and I fly from Gaua to Santo to Vila. We stay at the SDA mission in Vila until next Monday. Church on Sabbath at Porta Roki church, main church in Vanuatu. Sunday, we're going on a tour to Le Lepor Island, which is like the typical tropical reef island. Can't wait for that. Monday, 28 Aug, we fly back to Oz. Tuesday, back to work!

I feel I've been able to help people here in small ways. It's definitly been an experience I would not trade for 4 weeks of time somewhere else. I pray God is able to use me effectively in the last week being here. I feel it may be the most beneficial week, as I'll be spending more time with the people here.

I won't be able to send or reply to many more emails from now on. Email access is limited. Please refrain from emails until I'm back in the great country of Australia. Many thanks for your thoughts and prayers. I'll try send one or two more updates after this.
